This course provides an introduction to the Latin language. Students learn the grammar and vocabulary necessary to begin reading short excerpts of literature in future courses. Utilizing English passages, material culture, and pop culture, this course follows the fictionalized childhood of Horace, the poet, and introduces students to important social and cultural issues present in Rome around the time of Julius Caesar. As you become more comfortable with basic grammatical constructions and vocabulary, we will gradually ease into composition and more complex translations. Soon, what seemed so difficult in the beginning will be easy as pie!
